KENAI FJORDS NATIONAL PARK
One of my projects during my final season with Kenai Fjords National Park was to create a design for the covers of journals we would be using in program that involved encouraging visitors to connect with the landscape in a way that inspired them to be creative - whether that was making art, writing a poem, or simply recording some of their thoughts for future visitors to read.
The breaching humpback whale represents the joy and magic of what happens just off the shores of the fjords. One of the experiences that visitors (and rangers!) look forward to the most is watching hungry whales enjoy the bountiful summer supper sea. I chose to design the sticker in the style of artist Rockwell Kent to pay homage to the history of how art is intertwined with the history of the park and the community around it. Kent was one of the first artists to capture the rugged beauty of Resurrection Bay and share it with the rest of the world. You can see some of his Alaska inspired art here.
The following season, Kenai Fjords made the decision to turn my sticker art into t-shirts sold to visitors. These were sold by park partners, Alaska Geographic. I feel honored and humbled to know that there are people from all over the world wearing a design that means so much to me.
